Web 2.0 skepticism emerging

Noticeable since the Web 2.0 Conference last week is the usual plethora of overly enthusiastic blog entries. Web 2.0 is going to change the world, everything is going to be AJAX, etc. Thankfully however, there are the faint murmuring of skepticism showing up here and there. Now most of the skepticism is coming from venture capitalists; which is to be expected, they have the most to lose. So why would this give me cause to be happy?

Well, it’s one thing for your average hobbyist web developer to play around with something new, it’s something else completely when it’s a company backed by a huge amount of venture capital. When a web site has large financial backing, it doesn’t matter how bad it is, a bunch of people will be lead to think that the site got large due to it’s content and design.

Anyway, so if the VC’s are going to be skeptical and careful, then hopefully we’ll see a lot less highly funded, poorly thought out, web 2.0 style pages. And for that reason alone, perhaps the newbie web developer may actually think twice before diving head first into the murky waters that is web 2.0.

They might even decide to pay some attention to good solid web design. Hey I can hope can’t I!
