Web 2.0 vs. Semantic Web
There is a great article on XML.com (OReillynet.com) by Dan Zambonini on how he believes the web 2.0 meme is killing (or maybe we should say aborting since it never really took off) the semantic web (SW).
The problem with SW is of course the same as the problem with good web design using XHTML and CSS. It’s not really visible to the user, so of course gets put on the back burner while the “more important” functionality gets designed. Of course by the time you’re finished with the so called important functionality, you have a long list of other tasks that need attending to and all those extra nice-to-have’s get forgotten.
Of course right now not many programs or plugins take advantage of RDF and other SW technologies. I had the creative commons RDF code in this site, but had not seen it used until I recently installed the mozcc extension for firefox. Hopefully more organisations and sites will begin to take SW seriously and begin what I hope will become a torrent of new tools to take advantage of it.
