IE7 News

An interesting article on molly.com about IE 7 and standards compliance.

Points of interest:

  • Acid2 will not be passed by IE7, but it is definitely an aim for future versions of IE.
  • Significant improvements in standards compliance including fixed positioning, alpha transparency in PNG’s, as well as fixing existing bugs.
  • Some bugs not fixed: overflow problem & object for images

While it won’t be perfect, IE7 will definitely make web design using standards compliance less of a headache. Of course the question is how quickly this will replace all those copies of IE6 out in the world? I hope that all those XP SP2 machines out there will be updated quickly, and hopefully within a year IE6 will drop below the 10% mark.

Of course for some people this will be too little too late, and MS have more than enough haters out there who will dismiss anything they do. This is a good thing, as the alternative browsers will continue to do well, or at least well enough to keep MS on their toes. I think the current state of IE6 web standards is a good indication of what happens when we have a browser mono-culture.
